1971 Springfield special

About this bike

In 1948, Willem Metz bought a warehouse Haarlem and started its bicycle business. He was well known in Haarlem and provided a lot of material to the track riders in that area. The business was not going very well, but since his wife came from a rich family money wasn't the biggest issue here. In Metz's his shop  was it mainly a social event. After the weekend, on Monday, riders would gather in the warehouse for a cup of coffee and  talked about the achievements that had been made on the track.

Willem Metz took his job very seriously and also advised riders on other serious matters. So was mr. Metz well known for the fact that he would not sell bikes to people that entered his shop while smoking a cigarette, in those cases he would point resolutely to the door and gave them advice not to come back before you quit smoking.

Some of the best and well know Dutch artisan frame builders have worked at Springfield. Like Jasper Bouma (who later become chief builder at Jabo) and 'White Ko' who learned the profession later on from Frank de Groot (who later on founded Vittorio).

Sadly is Springfield now gone and in the building where Metz sat is now a mosque.

The springfield I am selling here has framenumber 710 and is probably produced in 1971 and one of the last original Springfields that was produced in the Metz workshop.  I've tried to keep the bike original as possible and therefore haven't changed much about it. Handlebar tape is still the original tape, it also has the original Silca pump. The frame itself is probably made out of reynolds 531C tubes and is still in a beautiful condition. It has almost no visible damages. The brakes are the famous weinmann Vainqeur 999's. The  headset is from Stronglight. Furthermore is the bike equiped with a Campagnolo crank and seatpost. The wheels have been rebuilt, they consist of very rare Simplex high flange hubs laced to Mavic Monthlerey Pro rims. The rest of the drivetrain consists out of a triplex rear mech, shifters and front derailleur. A true masterpiece for a everybody who wants to own a genuine piece of Dutch cycling history..
