Gazelle Champion Mondial AA 653 Team Unigarant Cross bike Ex-pro M. Hendriks.
About this bike
During the the 80's and the 90's, Gazelle was gazelle conquering the Dutch market. The 653 Cross bike was one of the most curiosities made in those days by Gazelle - special designed for the CycloCross a cycling variant that only was and still is popular in Belgium and the Netherlands! These bikes are very rare, especially this one made out of Reynolds 653 tubing.
Especially the way how I obtained this one is pretty funny. This bike was once part of the private collection of the former gazelle director, Mr. Breukink. He was a fairly religious man and wanted to help the church in Brummen, a village next to Dieren where the gazelle factory was based. The church was in desperate need for some funds so mr Breukink decided to donate this bike to that same church. The last owner obtained this gem during a lottery organized by the church to raise money.
The bike is in a used condition. Which isn't strange since it was used by former pro Martin Hendriks, his name decal is still visible on the bike. The bike has a complete chorus group and shimano cantilever brakes. It has NOS cross tires from vredestein. I tried to keep this part of Dutch cycling history original as possible. Cables and handlebar tape are still the same as in the days that it was used by mr. Hendriks.
The frame itself is made out of Reynolds 653 Tubing. Framenumber is 3202349 which would indicate 1978. Reynolds 653 tubing was introduced in 1989 so I think this is his 1989 season cross bike. Which would make sense since Unigarant verzekeringen was their sponsor during their 1989 season.
