1975 Gazelle Champion Mondial A mod. Piet de Wit

About

About this bike

I have owned several Gazelle Champion Mondial's in my life, but this one is rather rare. Although it isn't the most expensive model or used by a pro rider,  the model Piet de wit Gazelle's were something uncommon and therefore special.

Piet de Wit was an accomplished track rider and was twice world amateur champion. After his track career he became a meritorious professional cyclist and rode for the famous caballero outfit. After his pro career Piet started a bike shop in Wormer. Because of his excellent relations with the Gazelle factory in Dieren,  he got it done that Gazelle foresaw the frames he ordered from top tube decals "model Piet de Wit."

Another interesting detail of this gazelle is the colour scheme. This particular colour was only available 1975 till 1979 and is called 'yellow gold'. I have never seen it before but his bike sure does stand out of the crowd.

The framenumber is 3?75?15, and is missing two digits, a very common error in those days. I'm 99.9% sure that the missing digit is a 1. In that case the first 4 digits of the framenumber are 3175, which indicates a production year of 1975. Also is the patent number of the  rear mech 76, which indicates 1976.

I 've bought the bike from the first owner, who really cared about the bike. The wheelset consists of Campagnolo gran Sport hubs laced to Wolber Super Champion rims. Brakes and levers are Dura Ace Black and the complete groupset is a Campagnolo Nuovo record. Saddle is from Cinelli and the crankset is a SR Royal one. Everything is original.

The bike has been completely restored and has new cables and handlebar tape. It has no serious damages or any dents or cracks. A true masterpiece for a Gazelle collector!
